Weekly Design Recap 33

I’m in Switzerland and I should be having mulled wine and raclette when I am actually blogging, but there’s a bit of design stuff I wanted to share. Family dues brought me here, however, and the country practically becomes a graveyard on Sundays as absolutely everything is closed, and this will sound ignorant-ish but there’s no real incentive to come over a weekend unless you’re in a cabin by the Alps. Also, McDonald’s here is the priciest I’ve ever seen.

Things I’m working on

It is with a great deal of regret that I say I haven’t worked concretely on anything design-wise in the last week. But I have come up with an idea to actually create a visual guide to the Mexican content classification for games since Mexico relies on the US system —though, to be fair, it is actually translated into Spanish. Those in Europe, the UK and Japan are colour-coded and I’m thinking of something similar and not necessarily distinctively Mexican but I will study all of them to come up with ideas.[/text-with-icon][text-with-icon icon_type=”font_icon” icon=”icon-heart” color=”Accent-Color”]

Things I’ve enjoyed

During my breaks at work, I’ve been playing Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp a lot; I know I should be working on my design projects or actually finishing my Italian course on Duolingo, but AC on high-definition graphics is a joy, even more so when it’s easier to share stuff with friends. The interface is riddled with overlapping and unnecessary steps but the game is just as charming, with its fantastic sound design and visual style.

I once dyed my hair purple.

Things I’m struggling with

Reading Tim Ferriss’ The 4 Hour Body last year had me thinking about investing in some equipment to do my workouts since I hate going to the gym; so I finally had the money to buy a 50€ kettlebell and not feel guilty about it and now I have a 20 kilogram weight to do kettlebell swings; I managed to do a 100 in one session (not one sitting) and my legs are still on fire three days after. I signed up for this, so now I have to deal with it.[/text-with-icon][text-with-icon icon_type=”font_icon” icon=”icon-book” color=”Accent-Color”]

Things I’ve learnt

I trust my nose more than the expiration dates on food labels and working in food retail of late, I cringe whenever I need to throw away boxes and boxed of perfectly edible goods. So this video is a big validation of expiration dates being total bullcrap.

Things I’m listening to

I almost didn’t share anything in this section this week but the latest 20K Hertz episode on sound design at Disney theme parks is well worth a dip in.[/text-with-icon]
